The Askew Sisters - the acclaimed English Folk Duo making waves on the folk scene with their energetic brand of English folk music

Sept 2012

Hello!

We hadn’t realised how long it had been since our last update! So here’s a whistle-stop tour of what we’ve been up to and what’s coming up next!

It’s been quite a busy year for us. We had another annual east-ish tour in March and April which was good fun and it was great nice to travel down to the West Country, East Anglia and up as far as Derbyshire and Lancashire. We’ve also been playing at some festivals old and new, which has been good fun! In June we played at Winchcombe Festival of Music and Arts, a new festival for us in a beautiful manor house not far from Cheltenham, to a lovely warm audience. We then travelled on to Chippenham Folk Festival, which was lovely to visit again and see lots of friends.

Other highlights of the summer include running a folk course at The Dartington International Summer School in the beautiful Dartington Hall. Lots of great music courses run there across 4 weeks over the summer, but this was one of the first times they’d had folk music, and it was a great success! We’re looking forward to returning to run another folk course there next summer. Towards the end of summer, we had fun playing at FolkEast – an exciting new festival near Lowestoft and also Bromyard Festival, which we’d never played at before and was a great way to finish the summer. There’s a review of the festival which mentions us here...

We’ve also been busy this year with some other projects. At the beginning of the year we worked with The Darren Ellis Dance Company to produce music for his new contemporary dance work ‘The Long Walk Home’. It was very successful and we performed it at The Place in Euston in April. We’re excited to announce that we’re going to be developing a new piece with him based on English rituals such as traditional Maypole, circle and ribbon dances as part of a residency for the EFDSS this autumn – watch this space.

Emily has also been busy playing early instruments for a production of Richard III at Shakespeare’s Globe, with Mark Rylance in the title role. The production has been highly critically acclaimed and will be transferring to the West End this autumn – exciting stuff!

Hazel has also been busy with her singing trio Lady Maisery, who were nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Newcomer earlier this year. They’ll be touring in November: www.ladymaisery.com

Hazel has also been working More Films... to produce the soundtrack for a trilogy of short films based on fairy tales, which she will be finishing over the winter months.

So what’s coming up next? Well, we’re in the process of recording a new album! We realised it’s been nearly 3 years since the last, so are very excited about a new one! We’ll be touring in April to celebrate the release and will be launching it in London – watch this space for futher details.

We’re updating tour dates for next year all the time, so keep an eye on the gig list for further info.
