The Askew Sisters - the young duo making waves on the folk scene with their energetic brand of English folk music

November 2011

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while since our last update, so we thought we’d let you know what we’ve been up to!

We had a great summer. In June, Hazel finished her degree in English Literature with Music and got a First, as well as winning the Harry Clews Prize for highest recital mark. In July we had a fabulous time being tutors for Aldeburgh Young Musician’s ‘Physical Sound’ Summer school, alongside composer Mark Bowden, contemporary dancer Darren Ellis, and clarinettist Stuart King. Emily was also busy playing with The Dufay Collective http://www.dufay.com/ and Hazel with her singing trio Lady Maisery.

At the beginning of September, our medieval ensemble The Artisans (www.the-artisans.co.uk) went on tour to the west country (and Aberdeen, a well planned tour there!) which was great fun. We also had quite a few folk clubs in September and October as The Askew Sisters, including a return trip to Tenterden Folk Festival, which was lovely.

At the beginning of October, we had a gig at Buckingham Palace playing for HRH Prince Phillip and the development board of Shakespeare’s Globe, which was a great opportunity to wear dresses we wouldn’t usually wear at a folk club! For the rest of October, Hazel went on tour with Lady Maisery, you can catch up with their antics here: www.ladymaisery.com

Emily has also been busy at Glyndebourne again, this time playing for Handel’s Rinaldo on Sopranino recorder (which has a surprising amount of solo sections for such a small instrument!). The production is on tour and has a few more dates left, see here for details: http://glyndebourne.com/

We have a couple of exciting Askew Sisters gigs this week; on Friday we are playing at Kings Place in London. The gig is part of their Folk Union series and starts at 8pm, it would be lovely to see some of you there, tickets are available online here: http://www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on-book-tickets/music/the-askew-sisters

On Saturday, we are playing for a special concert of Hampshire songs in Emery Down in the New Forest. Tim Radford and Geoff Jerram are also playing, and we’ll be resurrecting a few old numbers that were collected in Hampshire, so should be a fun evening!

We have also just begun working with choreographer and contemporary dancer Darren Ellis (who we met at Aldeburgh), to create the music for his dance company’s new project called the Long Walk Home. There will be a performance of the work so far at Dance East in Ipswich on 2nd December.

We have also just joined Twitter! So feel free to follow us @AskewSisters

Think that’s just about everything!
